FORMER Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi, and ex-Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, have formally become members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a significant development in Nigeria’s evolving opposition landscape.

Their entry into the party was captured in a video that surfaced on Sunday, showing both politicians undergoing registration and receiving their membership cards. In the footage, Kwankwaso was presented with his card first, followed shortly by Obi, a sequence that underscored what appears to be their official induction into the party.

The development comes at a time when political actors across the opposition bloc are intensifying consultations and exploring alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move by both leaders is widely seen as part of broader efforts to reposition and consolidate opposition strength against the ruling establishment. However, it now leaves voters with a divided opposition.

Hours before the public emergence of the video, Obi and Kwankwaso had met behind closed doors with key figures of the NDC. The meeting was held at the Abuja residence of the party’s national leader and former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, The Punch reported.

The gathering, which took place in the Guzape area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is believed to be part of ongoing strategic engagements aimed at forging a united political front and strengthening coalition talks within the opposition.

Both leaders arrived at the venue at approximately 5:18 p.m., drawing enthusiastic supporters affiliated with the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement. The crowd welcomed them with chants of “O-K is okay,” reflecting growing grassroots excitement around a potential alliance between the two political heavyweights.

In terms of appearance, Kwankwaso was seen in a white babanriga complemented by his signature red-and-white Kwankwasiyya cap, while Obi appeared in a black kaftan paired with a matching cap, as they were ushered into the residence for the high-level discussions.
