2027: Ex-foreign affairs minister Tuggar joins Bauchi governorship race

FORMER Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Yusuf Tuggar, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State, setting the stage for what is expected to be a keenly contested political cycle in the state.

The declaration was made on Saturday during a rally attended by party faithful and supporters in Bauchi, where Tuggar confirmed that he would seek the governorship ticket under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He framed his ambition as a mission to deliver purposeful leadership and drive transformative development across the state.

Addressing the crowd, Tuggar emphasised that his aspiration is not rooted in personal power but in a desire to serve the people. He noted that his administration, if elected, would consolidate on the achievements of previous leaders while introducing fresh ideas to reposition Bauchi for long-term growth and stability.

The former minister unveiled a policy framework anchored on a 10-point development agenda, which he said is designed to accelerate sustainable economic and social progress. According to him, the blueprint prioritises economic diversification to reduce dependence on limited revenue sources, alongside large-scale agricultural reforms and livestock development to boost productivity and food security.

He also highlighted plans to strengthen critical sectors such as healthcare and education, while expanding opportunities for women and young people through targeted empowerment programmes. Tuggar stressed that youth inclusion would be central to his governance model, ensuring that younger demographics play an active role in decision-making and leadership.

Beyond these, the agenda outlines initiatives in digital innovation and entrepreneurship aimed at positioning Bauchi as a hub for emerging technologies and small business growth. He also proposed investments in clean energy solutions to address power challenges, as well as infrastructure expansion and rural development projects to bridge the urban-rural divide.

On governance, Tuggar pledged to prioritise transparency and accountability through a firm anti-corruption stance, while also improving workers’ welfare, including better salaries and working conditions for civil servants.

Addressing security concerns, he said his administration would promote community policing by fostering collaboration between government institutions, security agencies, and local stakeholders such as traditional and religious leaders. He argued that such partnerships are essential for maintaining peace, strengthening trust, and ensuring long-term stability in the state.

“I am standing forward not for power but for service and progress,” he said. “We will ensure that no farmer fears going to the farm, no trader fears the road, and no child fears going to school.”

Tuggar concluded by appealing to party stakeholders and delegates within the APC to support his bid, noting that securing the party’s ticket is the first critical step toward realising his vision for Bauchi State in 2027.
