Bauchi governor Bala Mohammed, allies set to defect to ADC Thursday

GOVERNOR of Bauchi State, Mr Bala Mohammed, is preparing to formally align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside his supporters, with a final decision expected on Thursday.

The planned move follows signals from the governor on Tuesday when he received a delegation of ADC leaders at the Government House in Bauchi. Among those present was a former secretary to the government of the federation, Mr Babachir Lawal.

The possible defection comes against the backdrop of a prolonged internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has persisted since the 2022 convention. The turmoil iin 2025 ntensified after a faction led by Kabiru Turaki convened a parallel convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Mohammed said repeated attempts to restore unity within the PDP had failed, despite setting up reconciliation committees at both national and state levels. He noted that consultations had also explored other political options, including the ruling party, but those efforts did not yield a viable path.

According to him, the ADC has emerged as the most acceptable platform so far, although talks are still ongoing. He disclosed that David Mark, the party’s national chairman, extended an invitation following extensive engagements.

Describing the outreach as significant, Mohammed said it presents an opportunity to reconnect with the opposition space where he has historically operated. However, he stressed that no final decision has been reached.

The governor explained that he is under increasing pressure from his political base to chart a new course. To manage the process, committees have been constituted both in Abuja and within Bauchi to evaluate options and guide the transition.

He reiterated that while multiple pathways were considered, it is untenable to remain in a political environment where they feel unwelcome. For now, he said, the opposition remains the natural destination.

Mohammed added that discussions with stakeholders across the PDP are ongoing to ensure any eventual move is well-coordinated and avoids unnecessary political fallout. He emphasised that inclusivity and consultation would shape the final decision.

A definitive position, he said, will be announced after a crucial meeting in Abuja on Thursday, with efforts focused on ensuring all key allies are carried along.

He also noted that, given his responsibilities at both the state and national levels, any political realignment must be approached with caution and due diligence.

While expressing appreciation for the ADC’s overture, the governor maintained that electoral success ultimately depends on voter support at the grassroots, not just party structures.

He concluded that, having exhausted efforts at political accommodation within the PDP, his camp must now seriously consider the alternative being offered by the ADC.
