Economy Post editor Odinaka Anudu to train 25 business journalists at U.S. Consulate in Lagos
RENOWNED business journalist, media trainer and Managing Editor of Economy Post Media Limited, Mr Odinaka Anudu, will on Thursday, February 12, 2026, lead a high-level journalism clinic on business and economic reporting for early-career journalists in Lagos.
The three-hour capacity-building session is being organised by the Media Career Development Network (MCDN) with support from the U.S. Consulate General, and will hold at the Consulate’s headquarters in Lagos.
About 25 journalists from print, online, radio, and television media houses across Nigeria are expected to participate in the intensive training, which aims to strengthen the quality, depth, and public-interest focus of business reporting in the country.
According to the U.S, Consulate, the clinic is designed to equip young reporters with both theoretical and practical tools needed to report accurately on Nigeria’s economy, corporate sector, and public finance. It will also address the growing need for journalists to move beyond surface-level coverage of business press releases and develop the capacity for investigative, explanatory, and data-driven storytelling.

During the session, Mr Anudu will guide participants through the basics of business and economic reporting, including how to interpret key economic indicators such as inflation, exchange rates, and interest rates. The training will also explore common pitfalls that reporters face when covering complex financial topics and how to avoid errors that could misinform the public.
A major focus of the clinic will be helping journalists translate numbers into relatable stories, showing how abstract figures on GDP, inflation, or budgets directly affect workers, small businesses, and households. Participants will also learn how to identify and follow key institutions that shape Nigeria’s economy, including the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), and the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).
The programme will further expose journalists to practical newsroom skills such as reading and analysing company financial statements, annual reports, CBN policy documents, and national economic data. Anudu is also expected to train participants on how to critically assess official claims and economic projections.
Beyond technical reporting, the clinic will introduce reporters to public-interest approaches in business journalism, including how to track government budgets, contracts, and spending, as well as how to use the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to follow the money.
Another key session will focus on reporting the real impact of government policies on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), workers, consumers, and vulnerable households. Participants will also review strong examples of investigative and explanatory business journalism from Nigeria and abroad.
The training will conclude with a practical segment on pitching business and economic stories for grant funding, giving journalists guidance on how to develop story ideas that attract support from local and international media development organisations.
The clinic will run from 9:30 a.m. and include a 30-minute tea break. Organisers say the small class size is intentional, allowing for interactive discussions, hands-on exercises, and direct feedback from the facilitator.
With Nigeria facing rising inflation, foreign exchange volatility, and major economic reforms, stakeholders believe the training is timely and critical.
The organisers expressed appreciation to Anudu for agreeing to lead the clinic and to the U.S. Consulate General for supporting the initiative, describing the partnership as a step toward strengthening Nigeria’s business journalism ecosystem.
Anudu is a veteran journalist with nearly 20 local and international journalism awards. He has worked in 9 newsrooms and has a master’s degree in Finance and Investment Management from the University of Salford, Greater Manchester, the United Kingdom.
