Tinubu approves major federal road projects in Niger, Rivers states

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate reconstruction of three critical federal roads in Niger State and the extension of the Bodo–Bonny Road in Rivers State, a move aimed at boosting connectivity, enhancing trade, and stimulating regional economic development.

The approval was given during a strategic meeting with the Minister of Works, Mr David Umahi, where the president emphasised the importance of durable infrastructure as a foundation for national growth and improved transportation networks.

Key road projects in Niger State

The three federal roads earmarked for reconstruction in Niger State are: Mokwa–Bida Road – spanning 120 kilometers, Mokwa–Makeri Road – covering 63 kilometers, and Bida–Labata Road – extending 123.5 kilometers.

All three roads are set to be reconstructed using reinforced concrete pavement, a choice that ensures long-lasting durability, reduced maintenance costs, and safer travel for commuters. According to officials, these upgrades are expected to significantly improve the flow of goods and passengers across the state, linking rural communities to major economic hubs.

Bodo–Bonny Road extension in Rivers State

In Rivers State, the Bodo–Bonny Road will be extended to connect directly with the East–West Road, a major arterial highway in the Niger Delta region. The project will be executed as a dual carriageway and constructed with concrete pavement to enhance structural integrity.

In addition to the road surface upgrade, the project will feature solar-powered street lighting, improving visibility, reducing accidents, and promoting energy-efficient infrastructure development. This extension is expected to enhance access to Bonny Island, a critical hub for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, and stimulate economic activities in surrounding communities.

Broader Implications

Government sources describe the projects as part of the administration’s broader effort to modernise Nigeria’s road network, promote industrial development, and create jobs. The adoption of reinforced concrete and sustainable technologies such as solar lighting reflects a commitment to long-term infrastructure resilience and environmental consciousness.

Analysts say by prioritising these roads, the Tinubu administration aims to unlock the economic potential of Niger and Rivers states, reduce travel time, and improve the safety and comfort of road users. Officials anticipate that once completed, these roads will significantly strengthen regional trade corridors and provide a boost to both agricultural and commercial activities in the affected areas.

The projects are slated to commence immediately, with timelines and contractors expected to be announced in the coming weeks, signaling the administration’s readiness to translate policy commitments into tangible infrastructure outcomes.
