Middle East tensions: Tinubu leans on governors to step up support amid limited federal cushioning

PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu has warned that the escalating conflict in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel and Iran could reverse Nigeria’s inflation trend, putting additional strain on household incomes.

The president returned to Nigeria on Friday with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu after a three-day state visit to the United Kingdom, where they were hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. While in London, Tinubu also held talks with Keir Starmer, leading to a number of bilateral agreements.

Speaking on Sunday at his Lagos residence during Eid al-Fitr celebrations attended by Vice-President Kashim Shettima and 23 governors, the president called on state governors to expand relief measures to help citizens cope with rising costs, especially in energy and transportation.

Tinubu stressed that the government must pay closer attention to vulnerable populations, noting that organised labour and other stakeholders are expected to push for additional support as global tensions feed into domestic prices.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the president also urged governors to remain focused on implementing policies that directly improve livelihoods, while working with the federal government to address insecurity.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening security nationwide, describing insecurity as a major obstacle to economic growth and national development. Tinubu added that discussions during his UK visit included securing equipment and international support.

The president further disclosed that he recently held talks with Emmanuel Macron as part of efforts to deepen cooperation on security technology and assistance from allied nations.

Tinubu also commended Shettima for visiting Borno State following recent attacks in Maiduguri, assuring residents of enhanced protection through the deployment of modern security systems.

Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, thanked the president for his interventions and leadership under the Renewed Hope agenda, while extending seasonal greetings on behalf of his colleagues.

He also praised the UK trip, describing it as a landmark visit that signals a new phase in Nigeria’s relationship with Britain. AbdulRazaq added that governors are working with security agencies on proposals for state policing, with plans to submit a framework to the National Assembly for legislative backing.

A number of governors attended the meeting, including Hope Uzodinma, Alex Otti, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Siminalayi Fubara, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and Dikko Radda, among others, alongside Borno State deputy governor Umar Kadafur.
