THE Nigerian government has called on its citizens in Iran and several Gulf countries to take precautionary measures following a sharp escalation in military activity across the Middle East.
The warning comes after the United States and Israel carried out coordinated missile attacks on Iran in the early hours of Saturday. Tehran later responded with retaliatory strikes in parts of the Gulf region, deepening fears of a broader confrontation.
In a statement released by spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government said it is carefully observing what it described as a rapidly changing and fragile security situation. According to the ministry, the advisory was issued due to mounting tensions and the risk of further military escalation.
The government urged Nigerians residing in or visiting the affected countries to remain alert at all times and pay close attention to developments around them.

Citizens were strongly advised to keep away from military bases, strategic assets and government facilities, noting that such locations may become targets or flashpoints as hostilities continue. Authorities also recommended limiting non-essential travel and movement until the security outlook becomes clearer.
“Avoid areas known to be strategic, military, or government installations, as these could be potential flashpoints,” he said.
The statement cautioned Nigerians against participating in or moving close to public demonstrations and large gatherings, warning that these could pose significant safety risks in the current climate.
The ministry emphasised the need for strict compliance with safety and security directives issued by host governments. It stressed that cooperation with local authorities and law enforcement agencies is essential for personal protection.
Nigerians in the region were also encouraged to rely on verified local and international news outlets for updates, while remaining cautious about misinformation. The government underscored the importance of following official communication channels for accurate and critical safety guidance.
Diplomatic missions have been placed on alert, including the Nigerian embassy in Tehran and missions in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, to offer consular assistance and maintain contact with nationals.
The ministry said it will continue to evaluate developments and issue further updates when necessary, reiterating that the protection and welfare of Nigerians overseas remain a top priority.

Nigeria also appealed to all parties involved in the confrontation to lower tensions and resume dialogue in the broader interest of regional stability and global peace.
“The Government of Nigeria wishes to call on parties to the conflict to de-escalate the crisis by returning to the negotiation table for the interests of global peace and coexistence,” the statement added.
