UNIZIK probes alleged sexual misconduct involving lecturer

THE Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has commenced an investigation into an alleged sexual misconduct involving a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts.

The development followed the emergence of videos on social media showing some students allegedly assaulting and manhandling the lecturer on the university premises on Saturday.

The lecturer was confronted by students following an allegation that he attempted to sexually molest a female student. The incident has since generated widespread reactions online, with members of the public calling for a proper investigation into the circumstances surrounding the allegation.

In response, the university management condemned the physical attack on the lecturer, stressing that allegations of misconduct should not be addressed through violence or self-help.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Aloysius Attah, Director of Information and Public Relations of the university, said the management had ordered an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation into the incident.

Attah said the investigation would determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the alleged sexual misconduct and the subsequent assault on the lecturer.

According to him, the university had received reports concerning the alleged attack on the lecturer following an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student.

He noted that videos of the incident, which occurred within the university environment on Saturday, August 15, 2026, had circulated widely across social media platforms.

The management, he said, was deeply concerned by the development and strongly condemned violence, self-help and jungle justice under any circumstances.

The university also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance position on sexual misconduct, harassment and other forms of inappropriate behaviour.

Attah said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, had consistently maintained the institution’s commitment to addressing such allegations through established procedures.

He added that while the university takes allegations of sexual misconduct seriously, all complaints must be subjected to due process, insisting that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands.

“Given the seriousness of the matter, the University Management has directed that an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation be conducted to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement said.

Attah further disclosed that the matter was under full review and that the appropriate administrative procedures had been activated to ensure that the interests of all parties were fairly considered.

He said the university remained committed to protecting the dignity, safety and wellbeing of both students and staff, adding that it would take appropriate action against conduct that violated those principles.

The institution said further information and developments regarding the investigation would be communicated at the appropriate time.
