Over 3,000 secure key credits as WAEC releases 2026 WASSCE results

THE West African Examinations Council has announced the release of the first batch of results for the 2026 computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for private candidates.

In a statement issued on Friday, the council disclosed that 10,480 candidates sat for the examination conducted nationwide between January 28 and February 14, 2026. Of this number, 3,429 candidates obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

WAEC further explained that 10,523 candidates initially registered for the examination, marking an 11.49 percent increase from the 9,438 recorded in 2025. However, 10,480 candidates eventually took the exam across 166 centres nationwide.

According to the council, 4,598 candidates, representing 43.87 percent, obtained credits in a minimum of five subjects, regardless of whether English Language and Mathematics were included.

It added that 3,429 candidates, accounting for 32.72 percent, achieved credits in five subjects, including the two core subjects of English Language and Mathematics.

The council also revealed that 608 examiners participated in the marking exercise, which was held at three locations, including Lagos, Enugu, and Kaduna, between February 26 and March 13, 2026.

WAEC noted that 43 candidates with special needs registered and took part in the examination. Among them were 11 visually impaired candidates, four with hearing impairments, and four albinos.

Providing a gender breakdown, the council said 5,106 candidates were male, representing 48.72 percent, while 5,374 candidates were female, accounting for 51.28 percent of the total candidates.

The examination body stated that results for 8,418 candidates have been fully processed and released. However, 2,062 candidates, representing 19.68 percent, still have some subjects pending due to issues attributed to them.

WAEC assured that efforts are underway to complete the processing of outstanding results to ensure affected candidates receive their full results promptly.

The council also disclosed that the results of 75 candidates have been withheld over alleged examination malpractice. It added that investigations are ongoing, and findings will be reviewed by the appropriate committee, with outcomes to be communicated directly to the affected candidates.
