NGX turnover hits N287bn as market capitalisation surpasses N150trn

TRADING activity on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) surged during last week, with investors exchanging over 4.84 billion shares valued at N287.75 billion across 332,453 deals between Monday and Thursday.

The trading window was shortened to four sessions due to the public holiday declared on Friday in observance of Workers’ Day, slightly compressing market activity into fewer days.

Despite the shorter week, performance strengthened significantly. Total transaction value rose by 34.49 percent compared to the previous week, when 3.80 billion shares worth N213.95 billion were traded in 297,202 deals.

Market breadth also improved, with total capitalisation climbing by 7.33 percent from N145.33 trillion to N155.99 trillion, reflecting stronger investor sentiment and price appreciation across key counters.

Similarly, the all-share index advanced by 16,555.32 basis points, moving from 225,722.49 to close at 242,277.81, indicating broad-based gains in the equities market.

Sector performance

The financial services sector dominated trading activity, accounting for 3.75 billion shares valued at N124.39 billion across 146,938 deals. This represented 77.56 percent of total traded volume and 43.23 percent of total value, reinforcing the sector’s continued influence on market liquidity.

Consumer goods followed as the second most active sector, with 177 million shares worth N30.85 billion traded in 36,609 deals. The services sector ranked third, recording 176.80 million shares valued at N4.38 billion in 15,310 deals.

Related Articles

Top trading equities by volume included Access Holdings Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, and Wema Bank Plc. Collectively, 2.02 billion shares of these companies were traded in 39,925 deals, valued at N60.03 billion.

These three stocks alone contributed 41.85 percent of total traded volume and 20.86 percent of total value during the week.

Top gainers

Among the best-performing stocks, Zichis Agro Plc gained N6.18 to close at N21.78 from N15.60 per share. The Initiates Plc rose by N7.60 to N30.60 from N23.

UAC Nigeria Plc appreciated by N39.50, closing at N181.50 from N142, while BUA Cement Plc advanced by N83 to settle at N418 per share.

Chemical and Allied Products Plc also recorded gains, rising by N26.70 to close at N145.20 from N118.50.

Top losers

On the downside, United Bank for Africa Plc shed N12.25 to close at N42.75 from N55 per share. Royal Exchange Plc declined by N0.34 to N1.36, while Trans-Nationwide Express Plc dropped by N1.50 to N6.40.

Deap Capital Management & Trust Plc fell by N0.71 to close at N4.19, and First HoldCo Plc lost N10.35, ending the week at N64.65 from N75.
