NGX records N195bn weekly trade as market value climbs to N139trn

THEA Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) reported that a total of 3.58 billion shares worth N195.31 billion were traded in 254,553 transactions during the last trading week from Monday to Friday.

A review of the exchange’s weekly data indicates a strong uptick in activity, as transaction value rose by 28.53 percent from the N151.94 billion recorded in the preceding week, when 3.36 billion shares were exchanged in 229,442 deals.

Equities also posted a bullish performance, with overall market capitalisation increasing by 6.60 percent to close at N139.82 trillion, compared to N131.16 trillion at the start of the week.

In the same vein, the All-Share Index (ASI) advanced by 6.57 percent, adding 13,397.14 points to settle at 217,167.57, up from 203,770.43 recorded in the previous week.

Sector performance

By volume, the financial services sector led market activity, accounting for 2.49 billion shares traded across 111,052 deals valued at N94 billion. This represented 69.62 percent of total volume and 48.13 percent of total value.

The services sector followed, with 329.03 million shares worth N3.45 billion exchanged in 14,050 deals, while the oil and gas sector came third with 152.47 million shares valued at N42.51 billion in 19,022 transactions.

Most active stocks

Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc, Access Holdings Plc, and Zenith Bank Plc were the most traded equities by volume during the week.

Together, they accounted for 1.03 billion shares traded in 33,067 deals valued at N46.08 billion, representing 28.92 percent of total volume and 23.59 percent of total value.

Top gainers

Trans-Nationwide Express Plc led the gainers, with its share price rising from N3.77 to N6.05, gaining N2.28.

Ecobank also recorded a strong increase, moving from N46 to N67.30, up by N21.30, while Stanbic IBTC advanced from N138 to N188.55, gaining N50.55.

Royal Exchange appreciated from N1.43 to N1.85, adding N0.42, while Aradel Holdings rounded out the top gainers, jumping by N370 from N1,279 to N1,649.

Top losers

On the losers’ chart, Coronation Insurance declined from N2.92 to N2.50, shedding N0.42.

Ikeja Hotel dropped from N39 to N33.40, losing N5.60, while International Energy Insurance fell by N0.49 to close at N3.06 from N3.55.

Academy Press also dipped from N8.75 to N7.65, down by N1.10, and Honeywell Flour Mill ended the week at N19, lower than its opening price of N21.35, reflecting a loss of N2.35.
