TRADING momentum on the Nigerian stock market softened last week as total transactions declined compared with the previous period, according to data released by Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).

The exchange disclosed in its weekly report that investors bought and sold 3.32 billion shares valued at N164.84 billion in 318,907 deals during the five trading days. The figure represents a drop from the 3.69 billion shares worth N177.68 billion that changed hands in 370,980 transactions in the preceding week.

While overall trading activity slowed, the market still closed the week on a positive note. The total value of listed equities increased, pushing the market capitalisation to N127.36 trillion.

The report attributed the rise to a marginal improvement in the all-share index (ASI), which gained 0.73 percent. The benchmark index moved upward from 196,968.15 points recorded in the previous week to 198,407.30 points.
