MSC, Nigerdock sign 45-year deal to expand Snake Island container terminal
MEDITERRANEAN Shipping Company (MSC) has struck a 45-year sub-concession agreement with Nigerdock to develop and operate a dedicated container terminal at Snake Island Port in Lagos.
The agreement will see MSC establish an exclusive 30-hectare container terminal within the port, reinforcing its footprint in Nigeria’s maritime sector. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.
Planned infrastructure at the terminal includes a 910-metre quay, two ship berths, three barge berths, and a depth of up to 18 metres. It will also feature six Ship-to-Shore cranes aimed at boosting cargo handling efficiency and capacity.
Speaking on the development, Nigerdock Chief Executive Officer, Maher Jarmakani, described the agreement as a significant milestone in the company’s partnership with MSC. He noted that the project would attract foreign direct investment and support growth in Nigeria’s maritime and logistics industry.

MSC president, Diego Aponte, said the agreement reflects the company’s long-term commitment to Nigeria and Africa. According to him, the new terminal is expected to enhance operational efficiency, create jobs, and strengthen Snake Island Port’s position as a global shipping hub.
Snake Island Port, an 85-hectare facility operated by Nigerdock, currently comprises three terminals that have contributed to expanding Lagos Port’s capacity and operations.
MSC, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is one of the world’s largest container shipping companies, with operations spanning 155 countries and a fleet of about 1,000 vessels. Founded in 1970, the company has maintained a longstanding presence in Africa, supporting trade across the continent through an extensive logistics network.
Nigerdock operates an integrated port and free zone in Lagos, facilitating international trade and providing logistics services to businesses accessing African markets.
