APM Terminals pledges $600m investment in Nigeria’s ports, logistics sector
APM Terminals has pledged to invest $600 million in Nigeria’s maritime sector, further boosting President Bola Tinubu’s push to attract foreign capital and modernise critical infrastructure.
The commitment was disclosed on Thursday during a meeting between President Tinubu and executives of the global port operator on the sidelines of the ongoing Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, according to a statement by his spokesman, Mr Bayo Onanuga.
The delegation was led by Regional President of APM Terminals Africa-Europe, Igor Van den Essen, alongside Head of Investments at APM Terminals, Martijn Van Dongen, and Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, Frederik Klinke.
According to the statement, the investment package will support the modernisation of Apapa port, expand logistics infrastructure, and deepen long-term private sector participation in Nigeria’s maritime industry.

President Tinubu welcomed the planned investment, saying his administration’s reforms are aimed at making Nigeria more competitive through infrastructure renewal and economic restructuring.
He said the government is focused on eliminating long-standing structural constraints and outdated systems within the port sector, while pushing for improved technology adoption, faster cargo clearance, and more efficient port operations nationwide.
The president added that Nigeria has the market size, skilled workforce, and economic potential needed to sustain globally competitive maritime and logistics infrastructure, urging more investors to tap into the opportunities created by ongoing reforms.
Earlier, Igor Van den Essen praised Tinubu’s economic reforms and policy direction, noting that they had improved investor confidence and encouraged renewed interest in long-term infrastructure projects.
He described Nigeria as a key market within APM Terminals’ African operations, citing more than two decades of partnership and extensive investments already made in the country’s port ecosystem.
Van den Essen also reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding its Nigerian operations through world-class terminal infrastructure and technology-driven port services.
He further commended the administration for introducing the National Single Window initiative, which he said has improved customs coordination, simplified trade processes, and reduced delays in cargo clearance.
