US-Israeli strikes claim lives of 48 Iranian leaders

US-Israeli strikes claim lives of 48 Iranian leaders

A sweeping military offensive by the United States and Israel has reportedly killed over 48 high-ranking Iranian officials, according to President Donald Trump, who called the operation a ‘major success.’ The strikes, which began on Saturday, mark one of the most dramatic escalations in the Middle East in decades.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump hailed the effectiveness of the campaign, saying, “Nobody can believe the success we’re having. Forty-eight leaders are gone in one shot. And it’s moving along rapidly.” He described the strikes as part of a coordinated effort to dismantle Iran’s top leadership and degrade its military and nuclear capabilities.

The attacks have already claimed the life of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, a figure who had ruled the country for nearly four decades. His daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter were killed in the strike. Former Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was killed in a joint Israeli–US airstrike, according to Iran’s semi-official Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) report on Sunday.

Iranian state media confirmed Khamenei’s death, signaling a seismic shift in the country’s political and military hierarchy. Analysts warn that Khamenei’s passing could spark internal power struggles and unpredictably reshape Iran’s domestic and foreign policies.

In a separate interview with CNBC, Trump emphasised that the offensive was proceeding faster than anticipated. “We’re doing our job not just for us but for the world,” he said. “And everything is ahead of schedule. Things are evolving in a very positive way right now, a very positive way.”

High cost of operation

Despite the claimed successes, the operation has already cost American lives. United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that 3 U.S. service members were killed, five suffered serious injuries, and several others sustained lighter wounds. CENTCOM also announced that U.S. forces had sunk an Iranian warship docked in the Gulf of Oman, further weakening Tehran’s military assets.

The broader implications of the offensive are significant. Military analysts suggest that removing dozens of senior Iranian leaders could destabilise Tehran’s command structure and disrupt its regional influence, particularly in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, where Iran-backed groups maintain a strong presence. At the same time, experts caution that the power vacuum may embolden hardline elements within Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, potentially increasing the risk of retaliation against U.S. interests and allies in the region.

Market reactions

Global markets have already reacted to the news, with oil prices spiking due to fears of supply disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint through which nearly a 5th of the world’s oil passes.

Brent crude (BZ=F), the international pricing benchmark, rose roughly 2.9 percent to close at $72.80 per barrel on Friday, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude (CL=F) climbed 2.8 percent to trade above $67 per barrel. Head of Geopolitical Analysis at Rystad Energy, Mr Jorge León, told Yahoo Finance that without any signs of deescalation over the weekend, prices could surge dramatically when markets reopen Sunday night, with Brent potentially reaching $90–$95 and WTI $80–$85.

International leaders have responded cautiously. While some Western governments praised the strikes as decisive, others warned that the situation could spiral into a larger regional conflict. United Nations officials have called for restraint and urged both sides to prioritise diplomatic channels to prevent further bloodshed.

The coming days are expected to be critical. With Iran’s succession process now in focus, the country faces uncertainty over who will assume ultimate authority. Observers note that how Iran navigates this transitional period could determine the trajectory of not only domestic politics but also relations with the United States, Israel, and neighbouring countries in the Middle East.

As the operation continues, both the United States and Israel have signaled that further strikes against Iran are possible, depending on developments on the ground. For now, the international community watches closely, aware that the conflict has the potential to reshape regional security and global geopolitical dynamics.
