UK goes fully digital on visas for Nigerians from February 25
THE United Kingdom will begin issuing only electronic visas (eVisas) to Nigerian travellers from February 25, 2026, as part of its transition to a fully digital border system.
In a statement released in Abuja, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) said that all Nigerians applying for UK Visit visas from that date will no longer receive the traditional visa vignette (sticker) in their passports. Instead, approved applicants will be issued an eVisa, which can be accessed online through a secure UKVI account.
The agency explained that the shift is part of a broader modernisation drive aimed at improving efficiency, strengthening border security and reducing reliance on paper documents.
Despite the change in how visas are issued, UKVI stressed that the application process and requirements for Nigerian travellers remain the same. Applicants will still submit their applications online, attend a Visa Application Centre for biometric enrolment, and meet all existing eligibility conditions. The only difference is that the visa will now be delivered in digital form.
UKVI also clarified that Nigerians who currently hold valid vignette stickers in their passports are not affected by the new system. Their physical visas will remain valid until they expire or need replacement.

According to the British authorities, the new eVisa system offers several benefits to travellers, including faster return of passports after application, the ability to view and manage immigration status online at any time, and improved security. Unlike paper visas, eVisas cannot be lost, stolen or altered.
Speaking on the development, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Ms Gill Lever OBE, said the move reflects the UK’s commitment to improving the travel experience for Nigerians.
“We are committed to making it easier for Nigerians to travel to the UK. This move to digital visas will streamline a key part of the visa process, making it more secure while reducing dependence on paper documents. We look forward to continuing to welcome Nigerian visitors, students and workers to the UK,” she said.
UKVI advised that once a visa is approved, applicants must create a free online account to access and use their eVisa.

The British High Commission in Nigeria said the digital shift forms part of the UK government’s long-term strategy to create a safer, faster and more modern immigration system.
