Adelabu promises power recovery within 14 days amid gas constraints
MINISTER of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, says the federal government is working to address gas supply challenges disrupting electricity generation, with expectations that supply will improve nationwide within the next two weeks.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Adelabu acknowledged growing public dissatisfaction over erratic electricity supply. He attributed the shortfall largely to inadequate gas supply to power plants but expressed optimism that ongoing interventions would soon ease the situation.
The minister disclosed that targeted steps are already being implemented to stabilise gas availability. According to him, these efforts are designed to support power generation and gradually improve electricity supply for homes and businesses across the country.
He also issued an apology to Nigerians for the hardship caused by the disruption, particularly during the dry season, noting that the crisis has affected key sectors, including education, commerce, and industry. He stressed that the underlying issues are beyond the ministry’s direct control.

Mr Adelabu further revealed that a monitoring committee has been set up to ensure gas companies comply with domestic supply obligations, adding that improved payment structures are expected to incentivise suppliers to maintain consistent gas delivery to power plants.
The government is targeting visible improvements in power generation within 14 days, while also working towards increasing output to 6,000 megawatts before the end of the year, he noted.
“We are working round the clock to return to the progress recorded in 2025,” Adelabu said, adding that the goal is to surpass previous performance levels as the country moves closer to the 2026 election cycle.
Beyond generation, the minister said efforts are underway to strengthen transmission and distribution infrastructure to ensure more reliable electricity delivery nationwide.

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding meter deployment under the Presidential Metering Programme, emphasising the need for stronger contract enforcement across the power sector value chain.
On his political ambitions, Mr Adelabu, who aims to become Oyo State governor, said his immediate focus remains on delivering results in his current role. While he acknowledged interest in the Oyo State governorship, he maintained that public service, whether at the federal or state level, remains his priority.
