CBN warns Nigerians over fake messages, cybersecurity threats
THE Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has alerted members of the public to the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications falsely claiming to originate from the bank.
In a statement issued by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, the apex bank said the messages are designed to mislead the public and compromise personal data through cyberattacks.
According to the CBN, the fraudulent communications often prompt recipients to click suspicious links, while spreading false information about the bank’s leadership, licensing activities, and policy directions. The bank warned that such messages are part of coordinated attempts to hack personal and financial accounts.

The regulator emphasised that its official website remains CBN official website, urging the public to rely only on verified channels for accurate information.
The CBN advised Nigerians to avoid clicking on unknown links or sharing sensitive personal information on unverified platforms. It also encouraged individuals to confirm the authenticity of any communication attributed to the bank through its official website and recognised media outlets.
Furthermore, the CBN called on the public to report any suspected fraudulent emails, websites, or messages to relevant law enforcement authorities.
Reaffirming its commitment to financial system stability, the apex bank stated that it is strengthening its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to safeguard Nigerians against rising digital fraud threats.
