248 passengers, 12 crew rescued after Qatar Airways makes emergency landing in Lagos

A Qatar Airways aircraft conveying 248 passengers and 12 crew members on Friday made a safe emergency landing at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following a technical fault mid-flight.

Emergency response was activated after the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) received a distress signal from the aircraft. The agency immediately coordinated with other relevant responders to manage the situation and prepare for the landing.

Preliminary information indicated that the aircraft developed technical issues while airborne, necessitating the emergency landing at the Lagos airport.

A statement released by LASEMA said the pilot, working closely with emergency teams stationed at the airport, successfully landed the aircraft on the runway. All passengers and crew were safely evacuated, with no injuries or fatalities recorded.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said response teams from multiple agencies were fully mobilised and remained on standby throughout the operation to ensure passenger safety.

He added that following standard safety checks, the aircraft was subsequently towed to the apron for further inspection and necessary repairs.

LASEMA also disclosed that the incident caused no major damage to the aircraft. Recovery and rescue operations have since been concluded, and the aircraft has been secured at the apron.
